Saudi Arabia is the largest exporter of oil to the U.S.
False. In 2011, Canada exported approximately 2.4 million barrels of oil per day to the United States, which accounted for 29 percent of net U.S. imports, the largest amount from one country. Saudi Arabia came in second, with about half that amount—exporting approximately 1.2 million barrels per day, or 14 percent of our net imports.
The increase in U.S. imports from Canada results in large part from the development of sophisticated technology that allows companies to extract oil from Canada’s tar sands.
