Among the newest congressional committees, the House Committee on Homeland Security and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs tackle bills related to American security.

Homeland Security committees consider proposals and the budget for the Department of Homeland Security. The House subcommittees cover such areas as counter terrorism, border security and homegrown radicalization.

The House committee was created in 2002. The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs replaced the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs in 2005.

The House committee website offers the basic content, including witness testimony and archived webcasts, but no transcripts. The press office recommends consulting CQ Roll Call.

The Senate committee website makes available many resources, including links to the legislation under review and comprehensive committee documents and reports, plus some reports related to its work from government agencies. Its content is also searchable by issue, which may be helpful for reporters looking for a broad review of the committee’s work on a topic.
