WASHINGTON – Last year, Police Chief John Crane discovered the Gadsden Police Department has owned two unmanned aerial vehicles since 2010. They were never used.
The two UAV wasps aren’t really needed, Crane has told reporters, and are being stored in a secure location until the department can conduct research on possible uses.
The Federal Aviation Administration says about 7 percent of the approximately 300 permits it has issued for UAV usage by government entities have gone to law enforcement. The permits are neede until the FAA determines regulations for more widespread use of drones, which are expected in 2015. Continue reading
