The stories, website and multimedia presentations in this project were reported, written and produced by 10 Medill graduate students chosen as McCormick Foundation scholars. They spent three months in Washington and traveled widely across the United States.
They interviewed more than 150 current and former military and health officials and experts, and National Guard and Reserve troops and their families, and reviewed scores of official documents and reports. They traveled to military bases, National Guard installations and medical centers in nine states to do on-the-ground reporting.
The students used traditional text, web and video reporting tools and social media to reach out to the community of those interested in the issue of how the guard and reserve have changed over the past decade and the challenges they face.
They used DocumentCloud to curate and organize relevant records and reports. View the documents.
