‘Checkpoint of the future’ takes shape at Texas airport

By SB Anderson

Ultra sensitive high-def cameras watching your every move, plans to scan irises and fingerprints, and creating different “screening tunnels” that automatically do what now takes three checkpoints are among the changes that airport and security planners have in mind for coming years.

Don’t expect to see any of them on your next holiday visit to Aunt Frannie, however; they are years away. And — cue Debbie Downer — even after they are rolled out, might take years to make a difference in time from curbside to gate for most leisure travelers.

Notes a USA Today story: “Passengers typically take two or three visits to become familiar with a new security routine such as taking off shoes. So, it could take leisure travelers three years to adapt to the changes because they travel less frequently.

“Two other hurdles to widespread use: extra costs to passengers and the additional airport space needed to set up the machines.”
