The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is expanding its James W. Foley Guide on Journalists’ Safety by adding a fourth seminar on the risks of reporting on conflicts, terrorism and violent unrest and by partnering with Facebook to further help college journalism educators teach students about how journalists can keep themselves safe online.

ABA webinar explores legal rules behind ‘Whistleblowers, Leaks and the Media’

In this news climate focused on the scope and degree of Russian hacking, release of materials to Wikileaks and the effect on the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, we are reminded that the legal line between whistleblowing and leaking is thin, as is the line between journalism and activism. The continued flood of leaks raises questions about the First Amendment, the role of the press, whistleblower protections and the power of the government to investigate illegal disclosures.

CPJ Safety Advisory–Crossing the U.S. Border

Journalists traveling to or from the United States have been stopped, questioned and faced prolonged and invasive searches that have put the confidentiality of their sources into question. Over the past year, members of the A Culture of Safety (ACOS) Alliance, a coalition of news organizations, journalists, and press freedom groups that includes the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, have documented at least seven such instances. In response to these incidents, CPJ’s Emergencies Response Team has issued the following advisory for journalists crossing the U.S. border.
