Dart Center fellowship for NJSI’s Josh Meyer

Josh MeyerMedill National Security Journalism Initiative’s Josh Meyer has been named as a 2013 Dart Center Ochberg Fellow at Columbia University.

“This year’s Ochberg Fellows – half from the United States and the rest from around the world – all excel at high-impact journalism. Despite wonderfully diverse backgrounds and beats – from local crime and social issues to war and disaster – they share a commitment to compassionate, informed coverage of people and places affected by violence,” Bruce Shapiro, the Dart Center’s executive director, said in a post on the Columbia’s web site.

The week-long fellowship “offers journalists a unique opportunity to learn about the many dimensions of psychological trauma, to explore ethical and craft challenges raised by their work and to forge relationships with colleagues who share their interests and commitment. Fellows attend seminars with leading experts in trauma science and journalism practice,” Columbia’s announcement said.

Meyer spent 20 years with the Los Angeles Times before joining Medill and the initiative in January 2010 as director of education and outreach. He is also the McCormick Lecturer in National Security Studies at Medill.

Meyer is the co-author of the 2012 best-seller “The Hunt For KSM; Inside the Pursuit and Takedown of the Real 9/11 Mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,’’ which was designated as a New York Times “Editors’ Choice’’ book in July 2012. He is also a member of the board of directors of Investigative Reporters and Editors, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting at the local, national and international levels.
