Students and faculty gathered at Alice Millar Chapel on Nov. 20 to remember and commemorate James Foley. Foley, a Medill alumnus, was killed by the Islamic State (ISIS) last August in Syria. He was passionate about exposing hardships in war zones and giving a voice to the voiceless.
Foley’s mother, Diane Foley, visited Northwestern for the first time to attend the memorial service. Faculty remembers him as being a human first and a journalist second.
It was announced at the memorial that Foley will be recognized with the 2014 Medal for Courage in Journalism.
