Medill students explore emergency management and security in Chicago

By CHRIS WALLJASPER

For five weeks, a team of Medill reporters dove into the world of public safety in Chicago, including topics directly related to national security at a local level. CityGuard, a special report, explores emergency preparedness, response, recovery and the history and impact of disaster on Chicago.

The content varies from data-driven infographics to compelling narratives and utilizes audio, visual, and solid reporting to offer an insight into how Chicago stays safe.

When deciding on how to approach this report, the producers knew that they wanted to focus on an idea that would have a lasting impact on the city. Honing the report to the areas of disaster and emergency allowed the report to address ways in which Chicago is prepared for what everyone hopes never occurs. In doing so, they were able to share helpful tips, inspiring stories, and valuable knowledge with Chicagoans and those invested in the safety of the third largest metro area in the country.

The report is by no means a comprehensive look at public safety issues in Chicago. The producers hope CityGuard will be the start to a larger conversation about how Chicago stays safe amid emergencies, both natural and man-made.

Sydney Abel, Derrick Clifton, Lee Schechter, John Seasly, Scott Thomas and Christopher Walljasper reported, produced, edited, and designed the site, with guidance from Jill Blackman, Adjunct Instructor at the Medill School of Journalism.
