‘National Security Purse Strings’ event with author Bill Hartung set for May 29

The Medill National National Security Journalism Initiative will host “Purse Strings: The Tug of War Among Congress, the Pentagon and the President over Defense Spending,” on May 29, 2014 in its Washington office.

This lunch event featuring national security expert and author Bill Hartung focuses on what journalists need to know about long-term budgetary realities and how the three elements of national security interact and head-butt over issues, especially numbers.

 William HartungHartung is the author of Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex (Nation Books, 2011) and And Weapons for All (HarperCollins, 1995), a critique of U.S. arms sales policies from the Nixon through Clinton administrations. He also is co-editor of Lessons from Iraq: Avoiding the Next War (Paradigm Press, 2008).

From July 2007 through March 2011, Mr. Hartung was the director of the Arms and Security Initiative at the New America Foundation. Prior to that, he served as the director of the Arms Trade Resource Center at the World Policy Institute. His articles on security issues have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Huffington Post and The Nation. He has been a featured expert on CBS 60 Minutes, NBC, the Lehrer Newshour, CNN and Fox News.

This event was organized by Medill National Security Journalism Initiative and the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation as part of an ongoing project to ensure journalist are equipped with the necessary knowledge to cover the dynamic and changing issues of national security.
