WASHINGTON — Women in developing countries are not only physically injured by birthing complications, but also are left to deal with emotional scars. Injuries from giving birth can cause incontinence and an inability to walk, leaving mothers shunned by society.
“The husband of a woman with second degree prolapse was reported as saying ‘If I cannot sleep with you, what is the use of keeping you? I’ll divorce you,” said Mary Ellen Stanton of the Bureau for Global Health and U.S. Agency for International Development.
Women’s health care specialists are coming together to discuss new approaches to help these women heal, by providing mental health services.
