Global Terrorism Database available online

A database listing thousands of terrorist acts dating back to 1970 is now available online, according to a report by the private homeland security blog nationalterroralert.com.

The initial database, compiled by Pinkerton Global Intelligence Services between 1970 and 1997, was donated to the University of Maryland. The school’s National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism continued to update the Global Terrorism Database with funding from the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security.

According to the consortium’s website, the database is “an open-source database including information on terrorist events around the world from 1970 through 2007 (with annual updates planned for the future),” and includes data on domestic as well as international terrorist incidents. The website states that the database contains more than 80,000 terrorist attacks.

According to the database, it has information on more than 27,000 bombings, 12,000 assassinations and 2,900 kidnappings since 1970.
