Coming up: Two webinars on cybersercurity

Understanding Cyber Viruses and Vulnerabilities
October 3, 2013 12 p.m.

Learn how cyber attacks can happen and what the sources of cyber vulnerabilities are from leading expert Paul Rosenzweig, author of “Cyber Warfare: How Conflicts in Cyberspace Are Challenging America and Changing the World” and former deputy assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

This webinar is scheduled for noon EDT on October 3. To register, click here.

Rosenzweig will explain the nature of cyber attacks. What, for example, did the Stuxnet worm actually do to Iran?  He will describe some of the recent attacks and intrusions and what they mean.

He also will review intrusion detection, encryption and interception policy. These issues are particularly timely in light of the recent revelations about National Security Agency programs based on documents obtained by NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Rosenzweig will discuss government activity on the Internet, what the government is doing to protect U.S. national security and how those activities square with constitutional protections of civil liberties and the Fourth Amendment.

Cyber Crime and Big Data
October 16, 2013 12 p.m.

Continuing the discussion on cybersecurity, Rosenzweig will share his expertise to help reporters better understand  cyber crime – how much money and intellectual property are we losing every day and what it means. How can governments around the globe coordinate to fight a criminal element that knows no boundaries?

The Internet erodes both privacy and secrecy. The electronic trail you leave in cyberspace tells everything about you — for example, your cell phone location can tell us about your habits.  Rosenzweig will explain what “Big Data” means. Fears of Big Data explain why so many are concerned by recent revelations relating to NSA activities.

This webinar is scheduled for noon Eastern Time on October 16. Click here to to register,

Both webinars are sponsored by the Medill National Security Journalism Initiative.
