CPJ Safety Advisory–Crossing the U.S. Border

Journalists traveling to or from the United States have been stopped, questioned and faced prolonged and invasive searches that have put the confidentiality of their sources into question. Over the past year, members of the A Culture of Safety (ACOS) Alliance, a coalition of news organizations, journalists, and press freedom groups that includes the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, have documented at least seven such instances. In response to these incidents, CPJ’s Emergencies Response Team has issued the following advisory for journalists crossing the U.S. border.

Medill, Foley Foundation Launch Safety Guide for Journalists

Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications and the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation — with partners Reporters Without Borders and A Culture of Safety Alliance — have published an online curriculum guide for college journalism educators to teach students about the growing risk of reporting on conflicts, terrorism and violent unrest around the world.

Medill journalists find holes in program designed to respond to infectious disease outbreaks

The project, titled “The Perfect Storm,” is being published this week by VICE News, a U.S.-based media organization with a global reach across all digital platforms. It is also being published on a special Medill website created by the reporting team, complete with even more videos and multimedia/interactive components. The findings are based on interviews with dozens of experts, health and government officials and a Medill analysis of dozens of reports and studies.
