US Hostage Official: ‘Austin Tice Is Still Alive’

Austin Tice is believed to still be alive more than six years after being kidnapped in Syria, according to U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Richard O’Brien. O’Brien would not give specifics while speaking at the National Press Club Tuesday, but repeated that the U.S. government believes that Tice is alive.

The Military Reporters & Editors association expressed deep concern Thursday about President Donald Trump’s latest attacks on the press and about the blackballing of a White House reporter. Trump verbally abused Jim Acosta, a CNN reporter, at a Nov. 7 news conference at the White House as Acosta was trying to question the president. After the event, the president’s spokeswoman said Acosta’s press pass is being revoked.

Journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, recipients of the 2017 Foley Medill Medal of Courage, have each gotten a seven-year prison sentence in Myanmar for violating the country’s Official Secrets Act in the course of their investigative reportage on an alleged massacre of Rohingya Muslims there, CNN reported Sept. 3.

Military Reporters & Editors Association: MRE Urges Release of Jailed Photojournalist in Egypt

The Military Reporters & Editors association has joined with other press groups in urging U.S. officials to press authorities in Egypt to release from prison an acclaimed Egyptian photojournalist who faces the death penalty for taking pictures. MRE joined two dozen other organizations and individuals in a June 26 statement that pressed Congress and the Trump administration to take all necessary steps to pressure Egypt to immediately and unconditionally release Mahmoud Abou Zeid, who works under the name Shawkan.
